Last night in New York, Nike Basketball unveiled their next signature athlete for the brand introducing the KYRIE 1 shoe. The Australian born Cleveland Cavaliers star guard joins the ranks of an elite group of basketball legends with this nomination. Kyrie Irving becomes the 20th athlete to join Nike Basketball’s signature line, the first to do so since Kevin Durant back in 2008. With this announcement, Irving is propelled into a whole new level of basketball stardom. Kyrie’s mass appeal can reach millions of basketball and sneaker fans worldwide, precisely what Nike looks for in an athlete to represent their brand.

The event was held in a Manhattan gallery, hosted by special guests including Charles Barkley and Penny Hardaway. “Welcome to the club,” Charles Barkley said to Kyrie as he sat down next to him before the event. LeBron James also a member of the esteemed Nike Basketball signature line “club” showed his new teammate support on Wednesday night. The KYRIE 1 is now available for customization on NIKEiD. The KYRIE 1 hits stores December 23 (North America) with a retail price of $110. Nike will also make available special KYRIE 1 T-shirts, hats and socks.
